Kratom Strains Explained: Vein Colours and Names

Kratom strains are not separate plants. Every kratom strain name you see in Canada, from Red Bali to White Hulu, describes leaf from the same species, Mitragyna speciosa. The name is a label built from vein colour, a region and sometimes a grade or drying method. Once you know how those labels are put together, comparing products gets a lot simpler.

In most plants, a strain or cultivar is a genetically distinct line. Kratom is different. The trade uses “strain” loosely to describe how leaf was picked, where it is said to come from and how it was processed. A typical name has up to three parts:

• A vein colour such as red, green or white;
• A region or origin name such as Bali, Borneo, Malay, Thai or Hulu;
• Sometimes a grade or process name such as Maeng Da, yellow or gold.

So “Red Bali” reads as red-vein leaf sold under the Bali name, and “Green Maeng Da” as green-vein leaf sold under the Maeng Da grade name. Researchers have identified genuine chemical differences between groups of trees, but those do not map neatly onto shop names. See Mitragyna speciosa: the kratom tree for the botany.

The vein colour names come from the colour of the leaf’s central vein and side veins when it is picked. The trade generally links colour to where the leaf is in its growth cycle:

• White vein: leaf picked earliest, with pale veins;
• Green vein: leaf picked mid-cycle;
• Red vein: the most mature leaf, with reddish veins.

Yellow and gold are not vein colours you will find on a tree. Sellers generally describe them as the result of a particular drying method, such as a longer dry or exposure to different conditions, or as a blend of leaf from different vein stages. Because there is no agreed industry standard for these terms, two shops can use the same name for leaf that was handled quite differently.

Blends work the same way. A product sold as a mix of red, green and white leaf, or a named “mixture”, is defined by the seller’s recipe. If you are comparing a blend, ask what went into it and check the batch’s lab report.

Regional names point to a place, but they are best read as trade names rather than proof of origin. Most internationally traded kratom comes from Indonesia, and some names reflect historic trading routes as much as where a tree grew. A leaf sold as “Bali”, for example, is widely understood in the trade to be a naming convention rather than a guarantee it was grown on Bali.

That does not make the names useless. Within one seller’s range they help you tell products apart consistently. But if origin matters to you, look for sourcing information and a matching batch report rather than relying on the name alone. Where kratom comes from covers the real source regions.

Maeng Da is a grade name rather than a place. It is used across all three vein colours, as in Red, Green and White Maeng Da, and it is meant to signal selected, higher-grade leaf. As with regional names, there is no official standard behind it, so the meaning depends on the seller.

The name is popular because it gives buyers a simple way to identify a premium tier in a crowded range. The practical test of any grade claim is the same: a clean, batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and consistent quality from one order to the next.

• Vein: the colour of the leaf’s central vein at picking, used for the red, green and white names;
• Maeng Da: a grade name used to signal selected leaf, applied across vein colours;
• Bali, Borneo, Malay, Thai, Hulu: regional or trade names, not proof of origin;
• Yellow and gold: trade names usually linked to a drying method or a blend;
• Blend or mixture: leaf combined from more than one vein stage or name;
• Crushed leaf: dried leaf broken into flakes instead of milled into powder;
• COA: a Certificate of Analysis, the batch-specific laboratory report.

Because names are inconsistent between shops, compare the things that can actually be checked:

• The batch lab report: alkaloid results plus heavy-metal and microbial screening;
• The test date and batch number, matched to the pouch you receive;
• Freshness: colour, aroma and texture when you open it;
• Consistency: whether repeat orders of the same name look and test alike.
