What Is Kratom? A Simple Guide for Canadians

Q: Is kratom the same as kava?

No. Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa , a Southeast Asian tree, while kava is the root of Piper methysticum , a Pacific Island shrub. They are unrelated plants under different Canadian rules; see kratom vs kava .

What is kratom? It is the dried, ground leaf of a tropical tree called Mitragyna speciosa, which grows in Southeast Asia. In Canada, it is legal to buy and own, but Health Canada has not approved it for eating or drinking. That is why Canadian vendors sell it as a botanical specimen for research and collection purposes only.

Where Kratom Comes From

Kratom trees (Mitragyna speciosa) grow naturally in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, and they belong to the same plant family as coffee. Most of the kratom traded internationally today comes from Indonesia, especially West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Farmers pick the mature leaves, dry them and grind them into a fine green powder. The colour of the leaf vein at harvest, red, green or white, gives each variety its name.

For the botany of the tree, see Mitragyna speciosa: the kratom tree. For the growing regions, read where kratom comes from and Indonesian kratom, and for every processing step, from kratom leaf to powder.

What Is Kratom Called Around the World?

Kratom is the Thai name for the tree, and it is the name that spread into English. Across Southeast Asia the same plant goes by other names: ketum and biak in Malaysia, kakuam and thom in Thailand, and mambog in the Philippines. Its scientific name, Mitragyna speciosa, is the one used on laboratory reports and in official documents.

In English you will hear it pronounced both KRAY-tum and KRAH-tom, and both are widely understood. Our guide to kratom meaning and pronunciation covers the names and their origins in more detail.

What Is Kratom Made Of?

Kratom leaves contain natural plant compounds called alkaloids. The two most studied are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Scientists around the world, including the World Health Organization, continue to research how these compounds work. Because that research is still ongoing, Health Canada has not approved kratom as a food, drug, or natural health product.

Is Kratom Legal in Canada?

Yes — with one important limit. Kratom is not listed under Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, so owning it is legal everywhere in the country. However, it cannot be sold for human consumption. Compliant vendors label it “not for human consumption” and sell it for research and botanical use. Common Kratom Formats in Canada

Powder — the most common and affordable format: finely milled dried leaf (how kratom powder is made).
Capsules — pre-measured powder in a capsule shell, popular for tidy storage. See our kratom capsules guide.
Extracts — concentrated preparations sold in smaller amounts at a higher price per gram. See kratom extracts in Canada.
Bulk sizes — larger pouches for buyers who prefer to keep more in stock; see buying and storing bulk kratom.

How to Spot Quality Kratom

Not all kratom sold in Canada is the same. Before buying from any vendor, check for these four signs:

A Certificate of Analysis (COA). This is a third-party lab report showing the batch is free of heavy metals, mould, and bacteria like Salmonella. No COA, no purchase. Learn more in our lab-testing guide.
Fresh colour and aroma. Quality powder is vibrant green with an earthy smell. Dull brown powder is old stock.
Sealed, airtight packaging. Air and light break down the leaf’s natural compounds.
Honest labelling. A trustworthy Canadian vendor never makes health claims. If a website says kratom “cures” or “treats” anything, walk away — that vendor is breaking Health Canada rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is kratom a drug in Canada?

No. Kratom is not a controlled substance in Canada. It is an unapproved natural health product, which means it is legal to own but cannot be sold for consumption.

Why do vendors say "not for human consumption"?

Because Health Canada has not approved kratom as a food or health product, this label is how compliant vendors follow the law. Seeing it on a package is actually a good sign — it means the vendor follows Canadian rules.

Where can I buy kratom in Canada?

Domestic online vendors are the most reliable option, because packages shipped within Canada do not face border inspection. Our guide on where to buy kratom in Ontario compares online vendors with local smoke shops.

Does kratom have risks?

Health Canada has published advisories noting possible health risks linked to consuming kratom, which is part of why it is not approved for ingestion. You can read the advisory directly on Canada.ca. Always review official sources before making decisions.

Is kratom the same as kava?

No. Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree, while kava is the root of Piper methysticum, a Pacific Island shrub. They are unrelated plants under different Canadian rules; see kratom vs kava.

Is kratom related to coffee?

Botanically, yes. The kratom tree belongs to the Rubiaceae family, the same plant family as coffee. The relationship is about plant classification rather than the leaf itself; see the kratom tree explained.

The Bottom Line

Kratom is a Southeast Asian botanical that is legal to buy and own in Canada, sold for research and collection purposes. If you choose to buy it, the two things that matter most are a real lab report and a vendor that follows Health Canada’s rules. Kratom Delivery Canada ships lab-tested botanicals from Vaughan, Ontario, with same-day GTA delivery and coast-to-coast shipping.
