Maeng Da is a trade label that signals a top tier of leaf. The name is widely reported to come from Thai slang, loosely translated as “pimp grade”, a street way of calling something the best of its kind. Whatever its exact origin, the intended meaning in the trade is clear: a premium, selected grade.

What Maeng Da is not is just as important. It is not a region, like Borneo or Bali, and it is not a separate species or botanical variety. The name is usually traced to Thailand, where the word kratom itself comes from. Today, though, most leaf sold as Maeng Da is sourced from Indonesia, like the majority of the world’s kratom. The name travelled with the trade and is now used by sellers in many countries.

You may read colourful stories about how Maeng Da is produced, such as claims that it comes from specially grafted or genetically unique trees. There is no independent evidence behind those claims, and there is no official standard that defines what qualifies as Maeng Da. Because Maeng Da is a grade, it is combined with the other parts of a kratom name. The four you will see most often are:

• White Maeng Da: white vein leaf from an early harvest, usually the palest powder;

It does not, on its own, tell you that a Maeng Da batch will test differently from a regional name.
