However, Health Canada has not authorized any kratom product for sale as a health product, and officers judge imports against that rule. Instead, buying from a store that already keeps its stock in Canada avoids the border entirely.

What Health Canada Has Said
In June 2017, Health Canada issued an advisory about kratom products it seized from two Edmonton stores. It makes three points that still shape the rules today:
- “Health Canada has not authorized any product containing kratom for sale.”
- “It is illegal to sell any health products in Canada without authorization from Health Canada.”
- “Health Canada is also working with the Canada Border Services Agency to stop kratom products from entering Canada.”

Ordering Kratom From a US Website
Ordering online is the most common way people try to bring kratom into Canada. US kratom sellers often advertise low prices and free shipping. Here is what usually happens to an order shipped to Canada:
- First, the seller ships it through the US postal service or a courier.
- Next, the parcel enters Canada and goes through CBSA screening, like every parcel from abroad.
- If an officer identifies the contents as kratom, customs can hold the parcel and refer it to Health Canada instead of releasing it to you.
- When that happens, you lose the product. Also, most foreign sellers do not refund orders that customs keeps.
Some parcels do get through. Still, “some get through” is not a plan, and the money is gone when one does not. Courier orders can also add brokerage fees and duties on top of the price.
Carrying Kratom When You Travel
Coming into Canada: you must declare the goods you bring into the country, and border officers decide what to admit. Given Health Canada’s stated position, expect officers to question kratom and possibly keep it. In short, do not plan to bring kratom into Canada in your luggage.
