Borneo is the third-largest island in the world, after Greenland and New Guinea. Three countries share it: Indonesia, which calls its portion Kalimantan; Malaysia, with the states of Sabah and Sarawak; and the small nation of Brunei.

For kratom, however, the Indonesian side matters most. The province of West Kalimantan, and especially the Kapuas Hulu region along the upper Kapuas River, is widely described as the heart of global kratom production. Because the leaf behind all three can come from the same broad supply, laboratory reports are the fair basis for comparison.

• Batch number and report: the number on your pouch should match its Certificate of Analysis;
• Test date: especially important for leaf with a long supply route;
• Heavy-metal and microbial results: as important as the alkaloid figure;
• Sourcing detail: a seller who can say more about origin than the word “Borneo”;
